SISTERS

The SISTA Project — or Sisters Informing Sisters About Topics on AIDS — is a social skills training intervention aimed at reducing HIV sexual risk behavior among African American women. It consists of five two-hour sessions delivered by peer facilitators in a community based setting. The sessions are gender and culturally relevant and include behavioral skills practice, group discussions, lectures, role play, a prevention video, and take home exercises. The five sessions that generate these discussions and activities include Ethnic/Gender Pride; HIV/AIDS Education; Self Assertiveness Skills Training; Behavioral Skills Management; and Coping.

In June 2009, JCCSI will begin implementing the SISTERS program which will target college students from Philander Smith College (PSC), Arkansas Baptist College (ABC), and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). A select number of students randomly selected from each school will compose of a class and be required to complete the five 2-hour sessions. The project has 4 main objectives:

  1. To design a gender-sensitive, community-based HIV sexual risk reduction intervention for African-American young adult women;
  2. To integrate routine HIV testing to students enrolled at HBCU’s;
  3. To increase HIV/AIDS Awareness and testing within the community; and
  4. To evaluate the efficacy of the program.
