ABSTRACT

Jefferson Comprehensive Care System Inc. (JCCSI) was awarded a grant from SAMHSA/ CSAT on October 1, 2007 for 5years. The grant requires HIV/ AIDS testing and education and referrals for those needing substance abuse counseling and/or HIV/ AIDS care/ treatment. The SAMHSA/ CSAT team’s goals are to establish quality outreach and pretreatment services for substance abusers and those considered high risk for contracting HIV/AIDS. JCCSI covers a 10-county service area providing comprehensive health care services and linkages to ancillary health care services.

Highly motivated and driven to fight the pandemic of HIV/ AIDS and substance abuse, the SAMHSA/ CSAT team at JCCSI has the honor of pioneering a program never before implemented in the state of Arkansas. In testing a populations considered at high risk for contracting HIV, the SAMHSA/ CSAT team is in the heart of the minority communities providing education, reading materials, and even contraceptives in an admirable attempt to deflate some of the major issues that have destroyed these communities for decades. Through hard work, inspiring words, and building a strong community rapport the SAMHSA team comes out of the gate reaching unprecedented levels of success. We will continue as an intricate player in the fight against HIV/ AIDS and substance abuse in Arkansas. Making people aware of their HIV status and linking clients testing positive for HIV, to additional health care opportunities, the SAMHSA/ CSAT team has the potential to be very effective at improving the quality of life of those directly and indirectly affected by HIV/ AIDS and substance abuse.
